How long have you been doing what you do and how did you become an Elder Care Consultant and expert in Alzheimer's and Dementia care?
I've been in the senior care field for many years, with over 18 years of experience in the industry. I began my career as a recreational specialist in a nursing home and later moved into operations and management, where I specialized in dementia care. Throughout my journey, I’ve built training programs and provided top-level consulting in senior care. My passion for helping others, coupled with a strong network of social workers, attorneys, and doctors, led me to establish myself as a care manager and consultant .
Who are your residents?
My residents are seniors who require specialized care and support, particularly those living with dementia or Alzheimer's disease. I primarily work with individuals who may not have a strong family support system, which allows me to make informed decisions in their best interest without external interference. However, I also welcome residents whose families are involved, as long as they are open to collaboration and trust my expertise.
I understand that aging can be challenging, and my goal is to create a nurturing environment where residents feel respected and valued. Many of my residents come from diverse backgrounds, including those from minority populations who may face unique challenges in accessing quality care. I strive to ensure that every resident, regardless of their financial situation, receives personalized care tailored to their specific needs.
The people I care for include those who are looking for a safe and supportive place to call home, where they can maintain their dignity and enjoy a good quality of life as they age. My residents benefit from a community that not only meets their physical needs but also provides emotional and social support, helping them navigate the complexities of aging with grace and dignity.
What makes your nursing home different from others?
My nursing home is different because of my deep knowledge and expertise in dementia care. I understand how dementia affects each individual differently, and I’m skilled at managing challenging behaviors such as wandering and rapid progression. I also have extensive experience in running a facility and a strong grasp of healthcare regulations, which helps ensure that my staff adheres to them. My role as an advocate for residents means I fight for their needs and make sure they receive the proper care they deserve.
What type of personality do you work best with and what is expected of residents and their families?
I work best with clients who have the financial resources to pay for services and are open to accepting and embracing the aging process. I value clients who trust my expertise and are willing to follow my advice. Ideally, I prefer clients without family, as family dynamics can complicate care, but I also appreciate families who are open to collaboration and creative problem-solving. I need families to understand that my goal is to make this part of their journey positive, and I expect them to work with me to achieve that.
What are the biggest challenges of running a nursing home?
One of the biggest challenges I face is managing complex health issues like dementia and ensuring compliance with healthcare regulations. It's also challenging to balance the demands of managing a facility while providing personalized care to each resident. I have zero tolerance for healthcare professionals who sugarcoat or ignore issues. Additionally, dealing with families who have unrealistic expectations or lack understanding of the aging process can be difficult, but I am committed to being transparent and providing the best care possible.
What results can residents expect if they move into your nursing home?
Residents can expect a program designed to help them age with dignity, regardless of their financial situation. My team and I are skilled problem-solvers, and we implement effective systems to enhance residents' quality of life. We help those with limited funds by offering assistance with Medicaid, and we ensure that residents have a safe environment for aging.
